A Fine Tradition 2, More Embroidery by Margaret Light
Published by Search Press
This book is the second offering from Light on this subject matter. On first glance from the covers perspective (I am afraid I missed the first published title) I thought: ‘Lovely but very traditional’. This can be read as a negative, a book for only the walk the line embroiderers.
The inside story is so promising, so please do not walk away just yet, if you fancy yourself as weighted on the arty textile side of things. The photography side of things is sublime, not staid, rather I see the interior design side of things coming out. At times, I feel that I am being led through the decorative arts movement; this title surpasses an embroidery only category and crosses at times into a museum like inspirational vision - i.e. imagine an afternoon spent in certain areas of The Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The tiles and china your may observe, seem to appear within the walls of this book.
With twelve projects, with some expected, i.e. the needlework case, others are less so, i.e. use of a decorative tile.
Find your best threads, the silks and wooden varieties and allow yourself to be led along to create an object of your choice.
All the stitch definitions and patterns are held lately.
Margaret Light is described as an Australian Designer. She is the traveller, the embroiderer, the interior arts minded…I see this is a much better description for her than Textile Artist - this multi talented lady is worth a watch. (p.s textile artists are wonderful, yet this descriptive title better reflects her particular genre of interest.
Projects and instructions as well as concise directively clear imagery will allow even the less path worn artist to fulfil their plans.
